Last week brought a very sad and shocking development in the
digital video world: the XVID team announced they were shutting
down development due to a copyright dispute with a company called
Sigma Designs. XVID is a leading open source MPEG-4 video research
project, founded by German student Michael Militzer in August 2001
to continue the efforts of DivXNetworks' former OpenDivX(R)
project. The details of the dispute can be found on the XVID web
site (
www.xvid.org), and there have been several interesting
developments since XVID first announced they were shutting down
development. Hopefully everything will be resolved soon and the
XVID folks will get back to their exciting work. In the meantime,
the DivX team strongly supports the XVID team in their struggle to
protect the integrity of their project.
